Diamond Machining for the Optics Industry
During the 1990s, founders Dr. Liu Xiangdong and Mr. Lee Kam Sung were researchers working at SIMTech (Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology). They had a vision to help Singapore build advanced machining capabilities and chose Diamond Machining as a subject for research. While using diamond to cut non-ferrous metal was quite pervasive, cutting steel was not so easily done due to the chemical reactivity between diamond and steel. In the early 2000s they successfully developed an ultrasonic tool system. This development made it possible to cut steel effectively and it produces super fine finish of less than 20 nanometer, which is required for the optic industry.
With this breakthrough, they were encouraged to commercialize the technology. In 2005, Delta Optics Technologies Pte Ltd (DOT) was incorporated and started to serve the optic industries around the world. Starting with a small office/factory at Ayer Rajah Industrial Estate, the business grew rapidly by successfully delivering products that met challenging requirements of high profile customers. In 2014, DOT moved into a larger factory in Jurong and this allowed the company to open another segment of the optic business - the manufacture of specialized and precision plastic lenses.
